Oshi Sports Project! Pickleball demonstration at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

Tokyo Metropolitan Government is carrying on the legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games and promoting the "Oshi Sports Project" to create opportunities for Tokyo residents to become familiar with various sports, taking advantage of the World Athletics Championships and Deaflympics being held in Tokyo this year. A pickleball demonstration will also be held.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government is carrying on the legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games and promoting the "Oshi Sports Project" to create opportunities for Tokyo residents to enjoy various sports, taking advantage of the World Athletics and Deaflympics being held in Tokyo this year. Utilizing the stage at Tomin Hiroba, which is planned to be a place where people can casually enjoy sports, sports that anyone can casually enjoy will be introduced during lunchtime.


The Japan Pickleball Federation will also provide a demonstration of pickleball, which is now becoming increasingly popular in the United States. (*On-site experience is not available.)


On the day, there will be food trucks and an introduction to the Tokyo 2025 IAAF World Championships mascot, Rikuwan, so if you're in the area, be sure to stop by.

②Implementation details

(1) Introduction and demonstration of sports by athletes

Events (planned): Pickleball , Indiaca, Double Dutch, Breaking


Pickleball

A sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, which was created in the United States in 1965. On a court the size of a badminton court, players hit a plastic ball with holes using a flat paddle.

Indiaca

It is a volleyball-type sport in which players hit a special ball with feathers ("indiacaball") with their hands. A major feature of indiacaball is that it is hit directly with the hands without the use of a racket.


Double Dutch

Skipping rope is done using two ropes. It is done by three or more people, with two turners and two jumpers facing each other jumping using various techniques. It is a fun sport that anyone can easily do, and naturally develops concentration and teamwork.


Breakin'

It is a sport in which participants improvise individual dance moves to the music, harmonizing with the rhythm and tone of the music, incorporating advanced performance and acrobatic elements to compete for creativity. It will be held as an Olympic event at the Paris 2024 Games.



This project is part of the "Future Tokyo Strategy." Strategy 16: Sports Field Tokyo Strategy "Sports Field TOKYO" Project This project is part of the "Favourite Sports Project." The "Favourite Sports Project" is an initiative to create opportunities for Tokyo residents to become familiar with various sports in conjunction with the World Athletics Championships and Deaflympics to be held in Tokyo in 2025, and to support Tokyo residents in discovering the fun of sports that suit their individual tastes and characteristics (Favourite Sports) as they come into contact with the appeal of sports.
